The Workshop

As news moves online, journalists must combine video, photography, Web design and text to tell news stories. During the spring 2009 semester, students in an Online Journalism Workshop at The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs used these tools to create innovative journalism projects.

Students told compelling stories about a historic home program in Anacostia, pollution on the National Mall, a local falafel shop, a priest turned cooking show star, the transgender community on campus, biking trends in D.C. and other topics. They learned to think about reporting in new ways and became pioneers in multimedia journalism.

Michael Shanahan, assistant professor of Journalism, and Jason Osder, assistant professor of Media and Public Affairs, taught the course.

This was the second iternation of the Online Journalism Workshop at SMPA. Vist the 2008 site for last year's student work.
